Rising Croatian tennis star Dino Prižmić has qualified for the main draw of this year’s final Grand Slam, the US Open, which begins Sunday in New York.
In the third round of qualifying, the 20-year-old defeated seasoned Australian Jason Kubler 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. Prižmić will face a tough first-round challenge against world No. 15 Andrei Rublev.
This marks the second time Prižmić has reached the main draw of a Grand Slam; he previously did so at the Australian Open in January, where he took a set off Novak Djokovic in the first round.
Jana Fett Falls Short
On the women’s side, 28-year-old Jana Fett will have to wait for her US Open main draw debut. She lost to American Katie Volynets in the third qualifying round, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.
This is Fett’s third time falling in the third round of US Open qualifiers, after similar exits in 2017 and 2018. It remains the only Grand Slam where she has yet to reach the main draw. Fett has reached the second round at both the Australian Open and Roland Garros and played in the first round twice at Wimbledon.
Croatia’s US Open Lineup
Croatia will have five players in New York’s singles competition: three men and two women.
• Men’s draw: Marin Čilić faces 23rd seed Aleksandr Bublik (Kazakhstan), while Borna Ćorić meets 20th seed Jiri Lehečka (Czech Republic).
• Women’s draw: Antonia Ružić plays American Taylor Townsend, and Donna Vekić takes on Spaniard Jessica Bouzas.
