In football, Dinamo Zagreb beat Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv 3:1 in the second round of the Europa League competition on Thursday night. The game was played in Bačka Topola in neighboring Serbia due to the security situation in Israel. The game was classified as a high risk match. As such no spectators were allowed at the venue and there was a heavy police presence.
Sayed Abu Farchi opened the scoring for Maccabi in the 14th minute of play. However, the lead was short lived, as Mateo Lisica evened the score only two minutes later, and then Dejan Ljubičić scored the go-ahead goal in the 19th minute of play. Ljubičić would complete the brace in the 72 minute of play. After two rounds of play Dinamo is first in the Europa League standings with two wins and the best goals for and against tally of 6:2. In the third round of play they will square off against Swedish side Malmo. That game is scheduled for October 23rd in Malmo with opening kick at 9PM.
Meanwhile, in the first round of the Conference League Rijeka lost to Armenian side Noah, 1:0 in Yerevan on Thursday night. Bosnian international Nardin Mulahusejnović scored the lone goal in the sixth minute of play. Rijeka midfielder Niko Janković received a red card for roughing in the 29th minute, effectively ending Rijeka’s chances of a positive outcome. They play Czech side Sparta Prague next on October 23rd. Opening kick-off is scheduled for 18:45 in Rijeka’s Rujevica Stadium.
