Speaking to reporters after his talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Prime Minister Andrej Plenković outlined the focus of their talks: “We discussed the situation regarding our bilateral relations, bilateral trade, and Croatia’s efforts to contribute to Japan’s relations with the European Union. We discussed all global issues, from the Russian aggression in Ukraine, to the war between Israel and Hamas, and the positions of the Croatian Government and the Japanese Government are effectively identical.”

For his part, Prime Minister Ishiba said that bilateral relations with Croatia were important to Japan: “Japan knows of Croatia primarily as a tourist destination with a beautiful coast and a thousand islands. But, Croatia is an important partner with whom we share joint values and principles. We cooperate with Croatia very closely, not only bilaterally, but also as a NATO and EU member state, and additionally in the context of international agreements.”

As part of his visit Prime Minister Plenković will also visit Osaka, where he will participate in EXPO 2025 and attend Croatia's national day on Sunday. The Prime Minister ended the first working day of his visit with a lecture at the prestigious Keio University on the topic of: "The European Union in a Divided World."
