Opposition MPs from the Most Party have voiced concerns over the planned introduction of a digital euro as early as 2029.

They warn that a digital currency could grant the European Union and the European Central Bank unprecedented control over how people access and use their money.

Lawmaker Zvonimir Troskot said his party would continue to work to “protect cash and the fundamental freedoms of our citizens,” arguing that digital financial tools are vulnerable to abuse.

“It is crucial to keep in mind that these digital tools can be exploited and misused for political purposes,” Troskot said. “In extreme cases, individuals deemed politically or otherwise unacceptable could be excluded from the financial system, especially since the digital euro would be programmable.”

In response, the Most Party is calling for the use of cash to be explicitly protected in Croatia’s Constitution.
