At the World Economic Forum in Davos today, U.S. President Donald Trump said he had secured a deal with NATO that grants the United States permanent access to Greenland.

Trump also appeared to step back from earlier tariff threats against countries opposing his Greenland ambitions.

"It's a deal that people jumped at," Trump said. "It's really fantastic for the USA. It's everything we wanted, including national and international security. It's in progress but also far along. It gets us everything we needed to get."

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte supported Trump’s remarks, saying the president “is right about his vision for the Arctic region.” Rutte highlighted growing Russian and Chinese activity in the area and stressed the need for stronger security measures.

He said NATO would coordinate with the seven countries bordering the Arctic to better protect the region. "Another course of action is to continue ongoing talks between the U.S., Greenland, and Denmark, with a focus on preventing Russian and Chinese economic influence and military presence," Rutte added.
