In Brussels Eurozone finance ministers nominated the Governor of the Croatian National Bank Governor for the position of Vice-President of the European Central Bank. He was selected among the six candidates put before the ministers.

The Governor of the Croatian National Bank, Boris Vujčić, secured the required qualified majority, winning support from at least 16 Eurozone member states representing a minimum of 65 percent of the bloc's population. A final decision on his appointment will be made by the European Council in March. If appointed he would assume the post on June 1st, succeeding Spain's Luis de Guindos, whose term as ECB vice-president expires at the end of May.

Here’s what Vujčić had to say about his nomination by Eurozone finance ministers: "I would like to thank the Croatian Government for my nomination, and especially Prime Minister Plenković, Minister Primorac, and our diplomatic mission to the EU for their active support throughout the entire process of my candidacy. This is also recognition for the Croatian National Bank and its successful work, recognition of everything that was done to achieve Croatia's entry into the Eurozone and its contributions since joining the Eurozone. If I am confirmed as vice president of the ECB, I will continue to work just as I have for my entire career - as a central banker since 1997 - for price stability, financial stability, and for the promotion of the role of the euro in the entire Eurozone."

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković congratulated Vujčić on X, saying that along with being a great personal achievement for the governor, it was also a great honor for Croatia.
