Croatian President Zoran Milanović will request an extraordinary session of the Croatian Parliament on Tuesday over the ecological disaster in Lika.

Milanović will submit the request under Article 79, Paragraph 2 of the Constitution of the Republic of Croatia, his spokesperson Nikola Jelić confirmed on Monday.

Under the Croatian Parliament’s Rules of Procedure, once the president, as an authorized proposer, submits the request, Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandroković is required to convene an extraordinary session within eight days of receiving it.

Milanović decided to seek the session after Monday’s meeting of Parliament’s Committee on Environmental and Nature Protection in Gospić failed to produce any meaningful conclusions.

Earlier on Monday, opposition parties called on Milanović to use his constitutional powers to convene an extraordinary parliamentary session over the illegal disposal of hazardous waste.
