MFEA: Mandić's condolences on the death of Ratko Mladić unacceptable

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs (MFEA) condemned on Friday the condolences of the Parliament Speaker of Montenegro Andrija Mandić on the death of war criminal Ratko Mladić, stressing that it is "unacceptable" and does not help Montenegro on its path towards membership in the European Union.

“The expression of condolences by the Parliament Speaker of Montenegro on the death of the finally convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić is unacceptable and contrary to the values on which the European Union is founded,” states the MFEA's announcement on X.

“Croatia will continue to insist on the consistent fulfillment of all criteria in the accession negotiations, including facing the past, prosecuting war crimes, respecting the judgments of international courts and good neighborly relations,” the announcement states, emphasizing that "such messages do not contribute to Montenegro's European path".

Former Bosnian Serb army commander Ratko Mladić, who was convicted by a final verdict in The Hague for genocide in Srebrenica and other grave war crimes committed during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, died on Thursday.

Mandić announced on X that he had sent his condolences to Darko Mladić on behalf of himself and the New Serb Democracy party "on the occasion of the death of his father, General Ratko Mladić."
