West Nile virus confirmed in dead crows in Zagreb area

The Croatian Veterinary Institute has confirmed the presence of West Nile virus in dead crows in the Zagreb area.

The first case was confirmed on August 27, 2026, when the virus was detected in crows found dead in the Zapruđe area.

The following day, August 28, laboratory testing confirmed the virus in four more crows found in Kvaternikov trg, Bartola Kašića Park, Savica and Dubrava (Dubec).

West Nile virus is transmitted exclusively through the bites of infected mosquitoes. The main vectors are mosquitoes of the Culex genus, which are found throughout Croatia. Mosquitoes most commonly transmit the virus among birds, but can occasionally transmit it to humans and horses.

Humans and horses are accidental hosts and cannot transmit the virus to other people or animals. The virus is not spread from infected humans or horses to another person or animal.

Anyone who finds two or more dead wild birds in the same location are advised to contact the nearest authorized veterinary organization. This will allow authorities, if necessary, to test the birds and rule out infectious animal diseases.
