On Tuesday President Zoran Milanović forwarded to Parliament a proposal to appoint Mirta Matić as the new President of the Supreme Court. Last week, Matić received a positive opinion from the majority of members of the Judiciary Committee, which interviewed Matić and two other candidates five months ago.

Speaking after a session of the HDZ party presidency, Prime Minister and HDZ Party President Andrej Plenković commented on the election of the President of the Supreme Court and the election of three judges to the Constitutional Court. Plenković said that the parliamentary majority would support President Zoran Milanović’s candidate, Mirta Matić, for this position if a vote were held in Parliament next week.

Plenković emphasized that the parliamentary majority had taken into consideration the new situation after President Zoran Milanović proposed Matić for President of the Supreme Court: “We have considered the new circumstances after the President of the Republic proposed Ms. Mirta Matić for the President of the Supreme Court and, in accordance with the party's position; we will propose to the parliamentary majority that it support her election. If a vote is held next Friday, the parliamentary majority will support her election.”

He added that the candidate made a good impression in her appearance before the competent parliamentary committee and that she has the necessary qualifications and experience: “We are satisfied with her performance, we have studied her plan, CV and we believe that she has the necessary qualifications, experience and maturity for this position.”

Plenković then said that the ball is now in the opposition’s court with regard to political responsibility for the functioning or non-functioning of the Constitutional Court, to which three new judges still need to be appointed.

“We will elect the President of the Supreme Court, with or without the opposition, and as for the Constitutional Court; the parliamentary majority will be in favor. If they are not elected, the burden of political responsibility for the non-functioning of the Constitutional Court lies 100% with the opposition,” the Prime Minister said.
