Prime Minister Andrej Plenković hosted on Tuesday American physicist of Croatian origin and 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics laureate John M. Martinis, highlighting his scientific achievements and his willingness to support Croatia through his expertise and advice.

In a post on the social network X, Plenković congratulated Martinis on his accomplishments, describing him as one of the world's leading scientists in the field of quantum computing.

“We are particularly pleased to have hosted Prof. John Martinis, the American physicist of Croatian origin and last year's Nobel Prize in Physics laureate. We congratulate him on his exceptional scientific achievements as one of the most prominent scientists in the field of quantum computing, as well as on his willingness to help Croatia with his advice,” Plenković wrote.

The Prime Minister added that Croatia is proud of Martinis' continued emphasis on his Croatian roots and wished him a pleasant stay in the country.

Martinis is visiting Croatia at the invitation of Croatian institutions. On Monday, he delivered lectures at the Zagreb School of Economics and Management and the Ruđer Bošković Institute in Zagreb, and also visited the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.

Martinis shared the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics with John Clarke and Michel Devoret for experimental discoveries demonstrating that the principles of quantum mechanics can also be applied to electrical circuits, helping pave the way for the development of quantum computers.

During his visit, Martinis is also expected to travel to Komiža, the birthplace of his father.
