The ten Pan-European transport corridors were set out in 1994 at the second Pan-European transport Conference. They were defined as routes in Central and Eastern Europe that required serious investment in the coming decade. Further additions were made at subsequent conference in 1997.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković opened the final section of the Pan-European Corridor Vc in Osijek-Baranja County on Monday. The opening of the section, which runs from Beli Manastir to the Hungarian border, marks the completion of Croatia's segment of the corridor.

"With this we have connected Osijek and Budapest, and cut travel time to a two hour drive. This is a huge step towards connecting Croatia and Hungary. I would like to thank the contractors and the Croatian Motorways Company, who worked diligently to ensure that this major infrastructural project is completed," Prime Minister Plenković said.

Also on hand for the opening was the Hungarian Minister of Construction and Transport, Janos Lazar: "Connecting the Hungarian M6 motorway and the Croatian A5 motorway is not just a matter of two countries, it is not only important for two nations but also for a Europe that is looking for more. The motorway is perhaps the most important part of the rail, road corridor that broadly connects the Baltic and Black Sea regions."

The corridors are distinct from the Trans-European transport networks, which is a European Union project and include all major established routes within the European Union. However, there have been suggestions to merge the two systems given that most of the countries involved are now EU members.
