Thousands of jubilant fans gave the Croatian handball team—the bronze medalists at the European Championships—a well-deserved hero’s welcome on Zagreb’s main square this evening. The celebration went ahead despite a dispute between city and national authorities over its organization.
Earlier in the day, the team was received at the government building by Prime Minister Andrej Plenković.
The City of Zagreb had rejected the possibility of Marko Perković, known as ‘Thompson,’ performing at the celebration. The government stepped in and organized the homecoming with the Handball Federation, including the controversial singer, alongside Prime Minister Plenković and Coach Dagur Sigurdsson.
“The Croatian government supports sports, the national handball team, the Croatian people, Croatian patriotic songs, and the celebration of our national successes,” said Sports Minister Tonči Glavina.
Prime Minister Plenković praised the team for promoting Croatian sports and the country. “You always bring great joy to the Croatian people,” he said. “That is why it is time for us to give something back.” He also announced that the government would be increasing financial rewards for sporting achievements.
Coach Sigurdsson, speaking at the government building, added: “I’m not used to giving speeches like this. I’m more comfortable in the locker room with these smelly guys here. But I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the support you’ve given us. Thank you very much.”
