Fuel prices to rise significantly as government announces latest price cap measures

Fuel prices at the pumps will rise significantly from Tuesday after the government announced its latest two-week price cap measures.

A litre of regular gasoline will cost €1.62, an increase of eight cents compared with the previous two-week period. Diesel prices will rise by 16 cents, bringing the price to €1.75 per litre.

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Tomislav Ćorić said the price increases were unavoidable despite government measures, including excise duty cuts and restrictions on retail margins.

"For now, higher prices are a certainty. However, I expect the situation to de-escalate in the coming weeks, which could lead to lower fuel prices within two weeks compared with the levels taking effect today," he said.

Meanwhile, industrial blue-dyed diesel will increase by 19 cents per litre, reaching €1.21.

The fuel used by farmers and fishermen has nearly doubled in price this year alone, adding further pressure on the agricultural sector, particularly pig farmers in eastern Croatia who are already facing the latest outbreak of African swine fever.

Agriculture Minister David Vlajčić said the government had secured 231 million litres of blue-dyed diesel so far this year to ensure there are no shortages of agricultural and marine fuel at the pumps.

He also urged consumers, as during previous periods of increased demand such as the spring sowing season, to show understanding and use only the amount they genuinely need, ensuring sufficient supplies remain available for farmers and fishermen.
