A major free trade agreement between the European Union and India was finalised in New Delhi today.
Covering roughly 25 percent of global GDP, the deal will eliminate or reduce tariffs on 97 percent of EU exports, saving the bloc billions in duties each year.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the agreement will facilitate new investments between India and the EU. “It will open up new opportunities for partnerships and innovation, as well as strengthen trade on a global scale. This is not just a trade agreement—it’s about creating prosperity,” he said.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the deal as “the mother of all deals.” “We are creating a market of 2 billion people. It is a story of two giants—the second and fourth largest economies in the world—choosing partnership in a true win-win fashion,” she added.
The EU expects exports to India to double by 2032 as a result.
