Zagreb's expensive cable car mega-project could begin operating early next year after waiting more than a year to obtain all of the permits needed to start transporting passengers to Sljeme, the highest peak of Medvednica Mountain, just above the city.

The cable car, which cost city taxpayers more than 700 million kuna, is down to the final permit needed, one certifying the cable car complies with city noise ordinances. This last hurdle was the subject of a meeting between Transportation Minister Oleg Butković and Mayor Tomislav Tomašević on Wednesday.

Ante Matić is one of 30 cable car workers waiting for the day when the system will finally begin operating.

“We are a well-trained team and we are ready to work,” said the shift manager.

This morning, Minister Butković was also ready to remove the last obstacle at a meeting with city representatives.

“These are positive results, the Mayor will tell you more about the details, as we agreed. If the cable car becomes a part of the transport infrastructure, the Mayor will tell you everything, everything will be fine, said Butković.

The problem holding up the opening is that city ordinances do not allow buildings that produce noise above 55 decibels near residential areas and the cable car produces a little more than that. However, if the cable care were to be classified as transport infrastructure another ordinance allows noise up to 65 decibels.

“I think it is important that the public understands that this is an administrative problem. There are different interpretations of existing regulations and one of the solutions is to change the rulebook on noise so that it explicitly includes a cable car in a way it currently does not, said Deputy Mayor Danijela Dolenec on Radio Sljeme.

According to sources a final meeting is also planned with Health Minister Vili Beroš, after which the criteria should be met for the State Inspectorate to issue an operating permit. If all goes according to plan, the cable car could open to passengers early next year.
