Police arrest woman on suspicion of murdering her newborn

Police arrested on Wednesday a 28-year-old mother - suspected of killing her newborn in Rogotin, near Ploče. The baby's body was found Sunday in the family's home. Police say the woman is in the hospital, but have not commented on her condition - only saying it's for health reasons. She's now facing charges of aggravated murder.

"Given the extreme sensitivity of this case, the police are not going to offer any details discovered during the course of the investigation,” said Dubrovnik-Neretva County Police Department Spokesperson Andrijana Biskup.

Biskup did confirm that on the evening of August 9, police found the dead body of a newborn in the home of the suspect – the mother - who, because of her condition, has been hospitalized.

“An autopsy was performed on the child's body and it was determined that the cause of death was violence,” said Biskup.
