Croatia’s top fire officials reported today on the firefighting season so far from the country’s operational firefighting command center in Divulje, near Split.
Chief Firefighter Slavko Tucaković said that although the number of fires has increased this year, all were extinguished quickly and efficiently. He highlighted the role of new technology in monitoring fires, which has enabled faster responses when they occur.
"The number of fires is up by 6.7%, but the area burned is smaller by 72%," said Tucaković. "This illustrates the engagement of our forces, the system’s effectiveness, and the work of all components of homeland security. Firefighters have demonstrated skill and speed in bringing fires under control."
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Tomo Medved added that the season so far shows the system is functioning as intended.
"The key takeaway from today’s briefing is that the new fire monitoring system—using cameras and aerial surveillance—is highly effective in controlling fires and preventing their spread," Medved said.
