After Sunday's flood, Mali Lošinj was hit today by a meteorological phenomenon - a sudden rise in sea level. In just a few seconds, the sea flooded the terraces of restaurants and cafes, forcing tourists and locals to higher ground.
Shortly before the storm and the flood, the Vela Riva waterfront was officially opened by Deputy Prime Minister and Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure Minister, Oleg Butković. The reconstruction project is valued at almost €3 million.
"With this renovation, the waterfront becomes a multifunctional space. A living room for citizens where certain events will be held. It is truly of great significance," Butković said.
Rain, strong gusts of wind and the flood in Mali Lošinj caused massive damage in just a few minutes. Especially in the Rapoća campsite. Strong gusts of wind uprooted about 50 trees, which fell on nearby cars, caravans, and tents.
"Pine trees fell on caravans, cars, and the infrastructure of the camp. It was as if someone had taken the camp and shaken it up a bit. As for the storm itself, it lasted 10 minutes, but it was enough to cause problems. We did everything we could for up to two hours, with 22 firefighters and six vehicles on the ground," said the commander of the Mali Lošinj Fire Department, Marin Brčić.
"We don't know the exact figures yet, but the extent of the damage is quite large. There are a large number of damaged vehicles, campers, and a large amount of overall material damage. However, the most serious issue is the two people injured in the storm who were urgently transported to Rijeka for further treatment," said the Mayor of Mali Lošinj, Ana Kučić.
One of the injured persons was released into home care yesterday, while the second underwent emergency surgery. According to doctors, she is stable and her condition is improving.
