The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent, the first Croatian short to win the prestigious Cannes Palme d'Or, has been nominated for the biggest cinematic prize of them all, the Oscar.
The 2025 Oscars nominations were announced Thursday morning by the US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
This is the first Oscar nomination for a Croatian film since the country’s independence.
The film is set in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1993. A passenger train is stopped by Serb paramilitary forces in an ethnic cleansing operation. Only one passenger dares to stand up to the attackers.
"We didn't want it to be a history lesson. We used a historical event to tell a story about how this is a dilemma that people face every day,” said director and screenwriter Nebojša Slijepčević.
In addition to Slijepčević's film, "Anuja", "A Lien", "I'm Not a Robot" and "The Last Ranger" were also nominations in the best live action short film category.
The 97th Annual Academy Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 2.
