In Parliament on Wednesday, Defense Minister Ivan Anušić and Interior Minister Davor Božinović presented the final amendments to legislation that will reintroduce mandatory basic military training in Croatia.

Under the new plan, recruits will serve for eight weeks, earning approximately 1,100 euros per month. Those choosing civilian service will serve three to four months with significantly lower pay.

Minister Anušić emphasized the growing security challenges facing the country, including hybrid warfare, cyber attacks, natural disasters, and climate change. He said the legislation aims to encourage citizens to undergo military training while respecting the rights of conscientious objectors.

Minister Božinović highlighted that civilian service provides a legitimate alternative for those who refuse military service on religious or moral grounds, while also strengthening the state's resilience against crises and potential threats.

While the majority of MPs supported the amendments, the debate revealed ongoing concerns over conscientious objection.

Marin Živković (MOŽEMO!) criticized the civilian service option, saying it forces young people to pave roads and clean streets for just 100 euros a month, arguing that it is insufficient compensation in today's economic climate.

Ante Deur (HDZ) reassured that post-service employment conditions would be equal for all conscripts, with no discrimination.

Damir Biloglav (DOMiNO) questioned the concept of conscientious objection, asking how it could apply to people unwilling to defend their country, family, or lives.

Arsen Bauk (SDP) downplayed the significance of the training, describing months of basic military service as unlikely to have a major impact.

The amendments mark a significant step in Croatia's efforts to bolster national defense capabilities, while balancing the rights of citizens who seek alternative service options.
