According to Eurostat, inflation in Croatia over the past five years peaked during the 2022 global energy and supply chain crisis before steadily cooling down, though it has consistently remained above the European Union and Eurozone averages.
The opposition SDP and Možemo parties continued their anti-inflation campaign title: "Plenković's Inflation", in Dubrovnik on Friday. The center-left SDP and left-wing Možemo parties blame the HDZ-led coalition government and Prime Minister Andrej Plenković for the spiraling inflation that has devastated citizen's standard of living. Here's what SDP Party President Siniša Hajdaš Dončić told reporters at today's press conference: “Analyzing data from the European Commission and the Croatian National Bank, it is clear that Andrej Plenković allowed foreign retail chains to enjoy profit margins of eight percent in Croatia, while the EU average six percent. He allowed large corporations to build solar power plants in former business zones, while Slovenia, for example - which is three times smaller than Croatia, produces twice as much solar energy as we do, and it is primarily produced by citizens. Is the sun the problem, or is it possible that Croatia's economic model is the problem? Because, I deeply believe that the problem is Croatia's economic model.”
“The government cannot convince people that the cost of living is affordable when their everyday experience tells them otherwise. Grocery prices in Croatia have reached levels comparable to those in Sweden, while average salaries are three times lower. No public relations campaign can convince people that life is affordable when they feel the impact of rising prices every day,” added Možemo coordinator Sandra Benčić.
