Yesterday, October 10, the 50th anniversary of the greatest success in Croatian emigrant football was celebrated in Toronto. Back in that distant year of 1976, the Croatian team Toronto Metros-Croatia won the championship title of the North American Soccer League (NASL).

As part of the day-long celebration program for this major anniversary, a match was organized featuring Toronto Metros-Croatia against CF Montréal. The celebration, titled "Croatian Heritage Night," continued with a party lasting into the late-night hours, Fenix Magazin reports.

The celebratory match between Toronto Metros-Croatia and CF Montréal ended in a 2–1 victory for the Croatian team, Toronto Metros-Croatia.

The match at the stadium in Toronto was watched by several tens of thousands of Croatians and friends of Croatia, who gathered to remember the greatest achievement not only in the history of this Croatian club but in all of Croatian emigrant football.

Remembering the Days When the Famous Eusébio Played for Them

The story of the Toronto Metros-Croatia club and their NASL championship victory—when Croatia was led by the famous Portuguese legend Eusébio—is considered one of the most fascinating stories in the history of football in that region.

What began as a modest project by Croatian emigrants turned into a historic triumph that echoed through the entire sporting world, largely thanks to the combination of Croatian defiance and the genius of the famous Eusébio.

It all started in 1956 when Croatian emigrants founded their club under the name Toronto Croatia. Around twenty years later, in 1975, the local club Toronto Metros found itself in severe financial trouble. The Croatian community in Canada decided to react and take over the club. They raised the money, bought the franchise, and merged it with their own Croatia, creating Toronto Metros-Croatia.

The biggest surprise for the football world came when the famous Eusébio signed for the club. The Portuguese international, known as the "Black Panther," was the top scorer of the 1966 World Cup and one of the greatest football players of all time. Although he was in the later years of his playing career and struggled with a knee injury, Eusébio put on stellar performances in Toronto, scoring 16 goals in 21 matches. Legendary Osijek players Ivan Lukačević and Ivica Grnja also joined Toronto Croatia from Croatia at that time, giving the team elite attacking power.

The pinnacle of this sporting fairy tale took place on August 28, 1976, in Seattle at the NASL final, the so-called Soccer Bowl. On their way to the final, Toronto Metros-Croatia defeated the mighty New York Cosmos of that era, which was led by the famous Pelé.
