Pope Leo XIV (71) has announced that he will undergo surgery in the next few days to remove a nodule on his lung. The growth was detected at a very early stage and has not spread. The Holy Father personally shared the news with the faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square, asking them for their prayers.
During his regular Sunday prayer, the Pope revealed details about his health status to the pilgrims and announced the upcoming surgical procedure.
"Recently, during medical check-ups, doctors found a localized nodule on my lung. It was detected at a very early stage and is clearly contained," he said.
Surgery Scheduled for the Coming Days
Following his doctors' recommendation, the Pope decided on the surgical removal of the growth.
"The doctors believe it is advisable to act, which is why, following their advice, I have decided to undergo surgery to remove the growth," he stated.
The surgery has already been scheduled, and the Vatican Press Office announced that the recovery is expected to last about a week.
First Health Issue During His Pontificate
This is the first known health issue for Pope Leo XIV since he was elected head of the Catholic Church in May 2025.
The 71-year-old Pope is known for his active lifestyle and love of sports, especially tennis, and until now, he was not known to have any serious health difficulties.
His predecessor, Pope Francis, passed away at the age of 88, following a period where his health had become increasingly frail during the final years of his life.
Pope Leo XIV thanked the faithful for their spiritual closeness and invited them to accompany him with their prayers.
