President Franjo Tuđman was only minutes away from potential death when Yugoslav military aircraft launched a missile attack on Banski Dvori in Zagreb on October 7, 1991.

The missiles struck the building, including Tuđman’s office, shortly after he had left the room with then-Yugoslav Prime Minister Ante Marković and Stipe Mesić, President of the SFRY Presidency.

The attack did not halt Croatia’s path to independence. Tuđman’s words from that day have remained associated with one of the most dramatic moments in the country’s struggle for independence:

“Croatia would have continued to live even without me, but now, with me, it will live in freedom!”

Missiles Strike Banski Dvori

At around 3 p.m. on October 7, 1991, air-raid sirens sounded across Zagreb. Almost simultaneously, a cloud of dust and smoke rose over the Upper Town.

Two Yugoslav military aircraft launched a surprise missile attack on Banski Dvori, then the seat of Croatia’s state leadership. Tuđman’s office was among the areas hit.

One civilian was killed and several people were wounded, while the building and surrounding area sustained extensive material damage.

Banski Dvori Missile Attack

Tuđman Was Minutes Away from Death

The attack carried particular political significance because of who was inside Banski Dvori at the time.

Shortly before the missiles struck, Tuđman had been meeting with Ante Marković, then President of the Federal Executive Council, and Stipe Mesić, President of the SFRY Presidency.

Only minutes before the attack, Tuđman and his guests had left the room that was subsequently hit.

The attack has been widely interpreted as an attempt to eliminate Croatia’s top political leadership at a critical moment in the country’s struggle for independence. The assumption was that the removal of Tuđman could seriously destabilize Croatia’s political leadership and alter the course of events.

The attempt failed, and Tuđman, Marković and Mesić survived.

“With Me, Croatia Will Live in Freedom”

News of the attack prompted strong reactions in Croatia and abroad.

That evening, Tuđman addressed the public, condemning the attack and stressing that it would not stop Croatia’s efforts to achieve independence.

His words from that day became one of the most frequently remembered statements from the period:

“Croatia would have continued to live even without me, but now, with me, it will live in freedom!”

JNA Denied Responsibility

In the aftermath of the attack, the Yugoslav People’s Army denied responsibility. Authorities in Belgrade also claimed that Yugoslav combat aircraft had not carried out flights that day.

The attack on Banski Dvori nevertheless became one of the defining events of the final days before Croatia formally severed its remaining constitutional and legal ties with Yugoslavia.

The missile strike took place just one day before the Croatian Parliament adopted its historic decision to terminate the remaining state and legal ties between the Republic of Croatia and the SFRY.
