At a session of the Parliamentary Committee for the Constitution, 13 candidates were presented for three vacancies on the Constitutional Court.

After the previous deadline for electing new judges was missed last month, the mandates of the current judges have been automatically extended for up to six months.

A bipartisan consensus is necessary since their election requires a two-thirds majority in parliament.

Ivan Malenica, Chairman of the Committee, said he believes three suitable candidates can be identified from the list. “I expect us to conclude these discussions today. After that, the parliamentary majority will hold internal consultations before meeting with the opposition to agree on all three candidates,” he said.

Deputy Chairman Saša Đujić emphasized that the opposition’s priority is simply to ensure the election of all three judges. “Regardless of their personal or political views, candidates must uphold the constitutional values of the Republic of Croatia. The opposition has never insisted on political orientation or on a division of seats based on party loyalties,” Đujić added.
