Ernestinovo: 34th anniversary of massacre marked

On this day in 1991, Ernestinovo, not far from Osijek, was occupied. In memory of the 41 victims of the war, both veterans and civilians, wreaths and candles were laid at the memorial park, under the monument.

With sadness, pain and pride, the gathered people recalled the tragedy that occurred there, but also the fact that they are still searching for three people.

“We are still looking for people, unfortunately. On this occasion, I would like to ask all members of the Serbian nationality who know something, to say something so that we may finally bury our dead with dignity,” said Srećko Grbavac, president of the UHDDR Ernestinovo.

“After Vukovar, the city of Osijek was simply in danger. The Croatian defenders, the people who led the defense of the city of Osijek and this part of Slavonia at that time, certainly knew that the attack of enemy forces had to be stopped there, and they partially succeeded in doing so,” emphasized Goran Ivanović, deputy prefect of Osijek-Baranja.
