Representatives of a number of opposition parties met on Wednesday in parliament to discuss putting pressure on Health Minister Milan Kujundžić to resign.
Most, which is leading the initiative, has officially called for the minister’s resignation. Their call has been backed by GLAS and the Peasant Party.
Most MPs called a press conference to argue their case against the minister, laid out in a document they have titled “50 Reasons Why Minister Kujundžić Must Go”. Most is taking the position that Kujundžić has performed so badly in office that the death of the young man in Zaprešić while he was in the hands of emergency medical workers is only a “drop in an ocean” of missteps.
“Given his level of communication and his manner, which says more about him than about us, I am wondering if he understands what his job is and what the priorities of that office should be,” Most leader Božo Petrov told reporters.
“We support the firing of Minister Kujundžić. The reason is simple. Everyone says Minister Kujundžić is a good doctor, however, that doesn't make him a good minister,” said GLAS leader Anka Mrak-Taritaš.
Krešimir Bejlak of the Peasant Party was even more blunt, “There has been talk for some time that Minister Kujundžić should not be minister. To paraphrase a colleague, he's been proven to be an incompetent politician, while it hasn't been proven he's a competent doctor."
Most also discussed the issue with SDP leader Davor Bernardić, who agrees that Kujundžić must go. He says Prime Miniter Andrej Plenković is unlikely to fire him because he may lose the support of certain hardliners.
Minister Kujundžić says only the Prime Minister Plenković can decide on whether he will stay or go. He also says he’s planning to sue Ines Strenja Linić, Božo Petrov and SDP MP Željko Jovanović over their remarks on this issue.
“They put Croatian citizens at risk. Raising fears and creating anxiety for the public and tourists in Croatia with their claims that the system isn’t working,” Kujundžić said.
