Prime Minister Andrej Plenković said on Wednesday that the government will adopt a new regulation on fuel price caps on Monday, along with a fresh package of measures to protect households and the economy at the end of the month, once the current one expires.
Speaking at a cabinet session, Plenković pointed to rising oil prices due to the war in the Middle East, noting that the price of a barrel has increased by 30 dollars, which will also push up fuel costs.
He stressed that the government has already taken steps to curb price increases and will act again next week after reassessing the situation.
Ensuring a stable supply of energy products - including electricity, fuel and gas - remains a priority, he said, along with keeping prices affordable for citizens.
Economy Minister Ante Šušnjar said global energy prices are highly volatile.
"Even if prices continue to rise, we still need to purchase them. We aren't an isolated island. So, of course we will feel the effects of fuel price increases. The price of natural gas has gone up significantly. We are already reacting, we can't afford to wait. Price jumps on world markets directly impact us. But, as a government, we will implement the right measures to soften the economic blow on our citizens," said Šušnjar.
"We will ensure a stable supply of energy and try to keep fuel prices affordable," Plenković added.
