The police have entered the Croatian Ski Federation on the orders of the USKOK Office for Prevention of Corruption and Organized Crime. Unofficially, the reason is the recent discovery of a large amount of cash carried by one of the responsible persons in the federation.
As unofficially reported, after the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina, an incident occurred at the border crossing in which customs officers stopped and searched the car of, according to the media, the spokesperson of the Croatian Ski Federation Nenad Eror, and found a bag full of money inside.
The media reported that 120,000 euros in cash were found in the bag. The money interested the customs officers, who reported everything to investigators, so the police and USKOK began searching the Croatian Ski Federation.
There is currently no official confirmation from USKOK and the police that the searches are being carried out, but the top brass of the ski federation itself confirmed that the police were on the premises and that they seized documentation.
The fact that something is happening in the Croatian Ski Association is evidenced by unofficial information that an extraordinary session of the executive board was held a few days ago, at which dismissals were threatened, and allegedly harsh words were exchanged.
The key question remains the origin of the money and who or what it was intended for. The media reports that the focus of interest of the investigators is the director of the Alpine teams, Vedran Pavlek, whom HRT journalists tried to contact, but he was not available. He is reportedly currently in his villa on the Spanish island of Ibiza.
