The European Union formally approved on Thursday a €90 billion loan for Ukraine, along with its 20th package of sanctions against Russia.

The move follows Hungary’s decision to lift its veto after a change in government, ending a months-long standoff with Kyiv over the Druzhba pipeline.

The approval comes as EU leaders gather for an informal summit in Cyprus, which is also being attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“We see now the progress and we are very happy that both Hungary and Slovakia have agreed to remove the obstacles to the legal document regarding the €90 billion loan to Ukraine, which we agreed back in December. I think that we shall discuss this also tonight with President Zelensky. I think this is very good news that the political agreement we had back in December is now respected by all member states,” said Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković as he arrived at the summit in Nicosia on Thursday evening.

In addition to Ukraine, EU leaders are expected to discuss the war involving Iran and rising energy costs.
