Brussels and Zagreb condemn the glorification of Serbian war criminal

Mladić died in a Hague prison hospital in late August while serving out a life sentence for genocide, crimes against humanity and other war crimes committed during the Serbian wars of aggression in the 1990's.

The former commander of Bosnian Serbian forces and convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić was buried in Belgrade on Monday, where he received a massive send off from like-minded citizens but also a number of Serbian politicians. His glorification in Belgrade was condemned today by the European Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho: "There's no place for glorification of war criminals, or of those who denied genocide, or of those who contradict the most fundamental European values."

The disturbing glorification of a convicted war criminal was also commented on in Zagreb, with Croatian Foreign and European Affairs Minister Gordan Grlić Radman emphasizing that this kind of behavior sends a clear message: "The glorification of this war criminal, who is irreconcilable with European values, perhaps also serves as a warning that these trends should be stopped and that we need to invest every diplomatic effort in protecting our values and European values."
