Prime Minister Andrej Plenković said Tuesday that the government is prepared to cap energy prices again if the crisis in the Middle East worsens, including the possible reintroduction of subsidies.

Speaking to reporters at an event in Koprivnica, Plenković said the government already has a response plan in place in case of further escalation.

“The government has intervened in fuel prices in the past and is ready to continue doing so by capping them if necessary to protect consumers and the economy,” he said.

Plenković expressed particular concern about developments in the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route through which about 20 percent of the world’s oil supply passes. He said any decision would depend on how the situation unfolds.

He also addressed the planned phase-out of gas and electricity subsidies, noting that the measures can be reinstated if circumstances require.

On the repatriation of Croatian citizens from the Middle East, Plenković said the Foreign Ministry remains in constant contact with Croatian diplomats in Qatar, Dubai, Kuwait, and other Gulf countries.

Consular offices are actively informing citizens about available options for returning to Croatia, he added.

Asked whether Croatia plans to temporarily close diplomatic missions in countries affected by the conflict, Plenković said their presence is now more important than ever.

“We have many citizens there, and someone must be available to assist them and coordinate their return, which is not a simple task,” he said.
