Police in Dubrovnik-Neretva County received a call from a supermarket in Ploče on Tuesday morning that clerks had found suspicious packages stashed between bunches of boxed bananas.
It turned out the clear plastic bags were filled with cocaine. Police counted 16 packets containing 18.2 kilos of the drug.
"This morning at around 7 am, the Dubrovnik-Neretva Police Department received a report from a supermarket chain in Ploče about finding a suspicious substance among packages that contained bananas," the police said in a statement.
In what appears to be an unrelated case, Croatian prosecutors recently indicted three people in connection to the discovery of 56 kilos of cocaine also packed in boxes of bananas. In that case, the drugs were discovered in Ploće Port earlier this year. Suspects Oliver Čokara, Anđelo Oršulić, and Goran Bebić have been indicted on drug trafficking charges. They are suspected of smuggling cocaine from Ecuador to Ploče. The indictment cites an unnamed Ecuadorian contact as the seller and states the suspects intended to sell the drugs in Croatia.
