Vukovar Mayor Marijan Pavliček has been re-elected as leader of the hard-right Croatian Sovereigntists at the party’s electoral convention in Vukovar on Saturday.

Pavliček said hard-right parties are gaining momentum locally and see an opportunity to strengthen their influence nationally.

“We won a historic political battle for Vukovar this spring and showed how authentic and honest we are — that we keep our word. Citizens recognized that and gave us their trust to govern Vukovar,” Pavliček said.

Representatives from several like-minded parties — Domino, the Croatian Party of Rights, and Only Croatia — also attended the convention. The parties agreed to cooperate in the next parliamentary elections.

“The sovereigntist forces gathered here today show that Croatia can and must do better. It’s our responsibility, starting with me, to agree on a joint approach for the next parliamentary election,” Pavliček added.

Mario Radić of Domino, Marina Logarušić of the Croatian Party of Rights, and Zlatko Hasanbegović of the Bloc for Croatia all said they believe they are stronger together at the national level.
