A large fire is burning on the island of Hvar after a wildfire broke out early Saturday afternoon on the southern side of the island between the villages of Jagodna and Ivan Dolac, where it quickly spread through grass and low vegetation.

All available firefighting units from the island are on the ground, supported by aerial firefighting aircraft, including Canadairs. Firefighters have so far managed to keep the flames away from nearby homes, but a northeasterly wind is pushing the fire towards higher ground.

Smoke from the blaze is visible from the mainland.

Speaking to HRT by phone in the early evening, Nikola Škare, commander of the Hvar Volunteer Fire Department, said crews are currently battling to contain the fire. “We have managed to keep the fire away from homes, and they are no longer threatened. However, the fire has moved higher and is heading over the hill. Four Canadair aircraft are assisting us. All island units are on the ground, and for now it is an ongoing battle. We hope to bring it under control by nightfall,” he said.

He added that while parts of the terrain are accessible, the bora wind is helping spread the flames towards the hilltop. According to the Split-Dalmatia County Fire Center, there is currently no threat to people or buildings.

Firefighters across Split-Dalmatia County have been battling wildfires for several days. The blaze in the village of Žedno on Čiovo, which is still not fully extinguished, has been among the most difficult in recent days.
