"As long as I am alive, not a single one of your soldiers will pass through Trpinjska Road again." These were the words of the legendary Blago Zadro, one of the greatest heroes of the Croatian War of Independence. His courage and determination transformed him into an enduring symbol of the defense of Vukovar. On October 16, 1991, a burst of enemy gunfire cut his life short, but it could not erase the memory of the man who defended his city and homeland until his final breath.
Blago Zadro, commander of the defense of Borovo Naselje and the 3rd Battalion, was a fearless warrior and a role model to his fellow fighters. Despite having no formal military education, he proved to be an exceptionally capable defense organizer.
He accurately predicted that Serbian forces would attempt to break into Borovo Naselje via Trpinjska Road, and it was precisely there that he established his defensive line. His fierce warning to the commander of the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) in Vukovar remains permanently etched in wartime history: "From today on, as long as I am alive, not a single one of your soldiers will pass through Trpinjska Road!"
Tragedy and Sacrifice
On the morning of October 16, 1991, Zadro was killed by enemy gunfire. His death dealt a heavy blow to Vukovar’s defenders. He was initially buried at a cemetery near the Vukovar hospital. However, following the fall of the city, Serbian forces exhumed his body and moved it to a mass grave.
For the Zadro family the tragedy did not end there. While his sons managed to break out of the devastated city in November, his oldest son, Robert, was captured in Kupres in 1992 and later executed.
An Enduring Legacy
Following the peaceful reintegration of the Croatian Danube region, Blago Zadro's remains were identified. On October 16, 1998—the anniversary of his death—he was laid to rest in the Alley of Croatian Defenders at the Memorial Cemetery of the Victims of the Homeland War in Vukovar.
Zadro was posthumously awarded the Order of Duke Domagoj and promoted to the rank of General. To ensure his courage, leadership, and ultimate sacrifice are never forgotten, the Command and Staff School of the Croatian Armed Forces now proudly bears his name.
Blago Zadro remains an eternal symbol of resistance, bravery, and patriotism, permanently written into the history of Vukovar's defense and the creation of a free Croatia.
