The birth anniversary of Ban Josip Jelačić, celebrated on October 16, is one of the four national holidays of the Croatian community in Serbia. It is observed in Petrovaradin with a formal cultural and religious program. By a 2005 decision of the Croatian National Council in Serbia, Ban Jelačić’s birthday is officially recognized as one of the four primary holidays for the local Croatian community.
Count Josip Jelačić of Bužim served as a general and the Ban of Croatia, Dalmatia, and Slavonia from 1848 to 1859. As a member of the noble Jelačić family, he stands out as one of the most prominent political figures in all of Croatian history. He was born in Petrovaradin in the Syrmia region, where his father, Franjo, served as the commander of the Slavonian Military Frontier. His mother was Ana, née Portner. On the very day of his birth, October 16, he was baptized in the parish Church of St. George in Petrovaradin.
The history of the Jelačić lineage is tightly interwoven with the history of the Croatian people. Originating from the Lika region, Josip Jelačić frequently highlighted his Lika roots. For four centuries, members of the Jelačić family served as warriors, notable frontier officers, high-ranking military commanders, statesmen, clergymen, educators, benefactors, and writers.
Croatians in Serbia will commemorate Ban Josip Jelačić’s birth anniversary on Friday, October 16, 2026, beginning with an episcopal Holy Mass at 5:00 PM at the Church of St. George in Petrovaradin.
Following the mass, a formal academy will take place at 7:00 PM at the City Concert Hall in Novi Sad (Bulevar cara Lazara 67). The event will feature a performance by the HKPD Jelačić cultural society from Petrovaradin, with musical guests Đani Stipaničev and Ritamania joining the program.
The Croatian Cultural and Educational Society "Jelačić" from Petrovaradin extends an open invitation to this formal celebration marking the 225th anniversary of the birth of Ban Josip Jelačić, one of the greatest figures in Croatian history.
"We invite you to honor this ceremony with your presence and join us in marking this significant anniversary for the Croatian community."
