European Commission refers Croatia to EU court over waste site

The European Commission has referred Croatia to the European Court of Justice for failing to clean-up an industrial waste site near Benkovac. 

The Commission said that the Crno Brdo landfill in Biljani Donji was a danger to human health and the environment. The site is located less than 50 meters away from homes. The Commission said that even though Croatia committed to address the situation on several occasions, there has been no progress at the site.

“For almost four years, the industrial waste deposited at the illegal landfill has not been cleared and properly managed, threatening to contaminate groundwater and air,” the Commission said on its website.
