St. Mark's Church, the heart of Zagreb's historic Upper Town finally reopened to worshippers on Sunday after three years of reconstruction.
The church, with its colorfully tiled roof, was badly damaged in the 2020 earthquakes. More than 6 million euros were invested in its reconstruction. The pews were packed on this first Sunday of Advent. Prime Minister Plenković was among the worshippers in attendance.
"This is truly a joyous occasion. We have finally restored the Church in such a way that in the coming centuries it will be able to withstand earthquakes and fires and to always be here to serve faithful and good people,” Vladimir Magić, the pastor of St. Mark’s Parish.
"I am very pleased. This church did not suffer as much damage as other ones did, primarily because its bell tower was not rendered unstable, however the reconstruction was complex due to its specific architectural characteristics and its great value as both a symbol and a cultural landmark,” said Minister of Culture and Media Nina Obuljen Koržinek.
