Croatian Christmas Market in Southern Ontario draws record crowd

The Croatian community in southern Ontario turned out in impressive numbers last weekend for what has become the largest Croatian Christmas Market outside Europe.

Approximately 2,000 visitors gathered at the Croatian Sports and Community Centre of Hamilton on November 30 for a festive celebration filled with Croatian tradition, culture, and holiday cheer, the Canadian-Croatian Chamber of Commerce reported.

Now in its fifth year, the Croatian Christmas Market and Candy Hunt was sponsored by the Chamber and co-hosted by the Consulate General of the Republic of Croatia in Mississauga and the Croatian Sports and Community Centre Hamilton.

Inspired by Zagreb’s famed Advent — often recognized as one of Europe’s best — organizers aimed to recreate the warm atmosphere, joy, and sense of community that make the Croatian capital’s holiday festivities so beloved.

Live Croatian Christmas music and caroling filled the venue, while the scent of fritule and mulled wine drifted through the air, giving visitors an authentic taste of Croatian winter traditions in the heart of Stoney Creek.

Guests enjoyed a variety of delicious Croatian food and drinks that kept them warm and satisfied on an otherwise cold, windy day. The lively market showcased 45 local artisans and businesses offering handicrafts, holiday decorations, gifts, and a range of cultural and culinary products, highlighting the creativity and talent within the community.

Children were especially delighted by the arrival of Sveti Nikola, who greeted them with traditional Croatian sweets and plenty of Christmas cheer.

Organizers expressed gratitude for the record turnout and overwhelmingly positive feedback, noting that the Croatian Christmas Market has grown into an annual tradition that strengthens community ties, celebrates Croatian heritage for younger generations, and shares it proudly with fellow Canadians.
