The women's national water polo team recorded their first win at the World Acquatics Championships in Singapore on Thursday, with a 16:6 win against South Africa.
The women, who are competing at the worlds for the first time, are well out of title contention, however, they could finish in thirteenth place if they beat Argentina in their final game on Saturday. Head coach Mia Šimunić: “This is our first victory against South Africa. Ten years ago I was coaching the junior team at the World Championships and we lost to South Africa. Now, again with effectively junior players, we secured our first win ever at the World Championships against South Africa.”
National team player Latica Medvešek: “In a way we expected this win - we really needed it. We really would have been disappointed in ourselves if the game went the other way.”
“We're very proud and happy to have achieved this first win. Congratulations to the entire team on their effort and this well-deserved win,” added teammate Matea Skelin.
Meanwhile, the Croatian men's team, who are the reigning World Champions, will face either Romania or arch-rivals Hungary in their quarter-finals matchup on Sunday.
