The UN General Assembly continues in New York at a time of extreme global tensions, the highest since the end of the Cold War.
Much of the discussion has focused on the war in Gaza and the recent decisions by some countries to recognize a Palestinian state. The conflict in Ukraine has also been a central topic.
Croatian President Zoran Milanović addressed the Assembly today. Speaking on Ukraine, he expressed hope that the “senseless loss of human life will end as soon as possible.”
He delivered a strong message on Gaza:
“In Gaza, tens of thousands of women, children—human beings—have been killed and are being killed. Millions lie without safety, food, medicines, and basic human dignity. This is worse than a mere war. It is carnage, and we urgently call for it to end, for safe delivery of aid—especially to children—and for the release of all hostages. Lasting peace can only come through the universal recognition of the legitimate political aspirations of the Palestinian people, long denied.”
Milanović’s speech highlighted the urgent humanitarian crises in both conflict zones, emphasizing the need for immediate aid, protection of civilians, and the recognition of long-denied political rights as a path toward lasting peace.
