Croatia's World Cup fate will be decided tonight as Zlatko Dalić's side takes on Ghana in its final Group L match, with a place in the knockout stage on the line.
The Vatreni could finish first, second or third in the group. A draw would be enough to secure qualification, while a victory would see Croatia leapfrog Ghana and improve its position heading into the knockout rounds.
Whatever the outcome, one thing is already certain – Croatia will have overwhelming support in Philadelphia.
Tens of thousands of Croatian fans have transformed the city into a sea of red and white, filling the streets with songs and celebrations ahead of kickoff. After a fan march through downtown Philadelphia, supporters continued the festivities in cafés, restaurants and bars before making their way to the stadium.
HRT reporter Andrej Rašljanin says the atmosphere has been building since Friday evening. Although rain briefly interrupted celebrations on the eve of the match, forecasts indicate conditions should improve before kickoff.
Croatia enters the match with history on its side. Since the 2014 World Cup, the Vatreni have recorded three wins and one draw against African opposition at the tournament. However, Dalić insists those statistics will mean little unless his team improves on its recent performances.
"We have a match ahead of us that will decide whether we advance from the group stage," Dalić said ahead of the game. "We're facing an opponent that has already secured qualification, played two very good matches, conceded no goals and is extremely dangerous in transition. We have to play much better than we did in our last two games. Above all, we need to be more focused and more accountable defensively."
Veteran Ivan Perišić also stressed the team's determination heading into the decisive encounter.
"We've been working really hard every day – two training sessions a day," Perišić said. "I'm here for as long as I can make a difference and keep up with the younger players. As long as I can do that, I'll keep giving everything for this team."
The clash in Philadelphia will determine whether Croatia's World Cup journey continues into the knockout stage. The match kicks off at 11PM CET.
