European javelin champion Sara Kolak and 800-metre silver medalist Marino Bloudek were received at the government building on Wednesday by Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, who congratulated them on their success.

Plenković thanked the athletes for inspiring future generations to take up athletics and for promoting Croatia on the international stage.

“I congratulate you from the bottom of my heart. I think this is a fantastic result for you and your careers, and an encouragement for young people to get involved in athletics. Your success will inspire a new generation. Without top-level results like these, it’s harder to motivate young people. With this achievement, you’ve helped raise the profile of athletics and inspire more young people to take up the sport,” the Prime Minister said.

Bloudek noted that, after 50 years, Croatia once again has a medal in the 800 metres.

“I’m extremely happy and honoured to have competed for Croatia and represented the colours of our country. I gave it everything I had. The medal is silver, but for me, it’s as good as gold,” Bloudek said.

Kolak, meanwhile, reflected on the ten years since she won Olympic gold in Rio in 2016.

“Some would say they waited ten years. I’ve worked hard for ten years, and I’m proud to have brought home another medal. I’d like to thank everyone for their support,” Kolak said.
