Interior Minister Davor Božinović and Minister of Defense Ivan Anušić commented on the illegal incursion of tens of thousands of migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.
“This is a situation where the European Union has treated and defined the incursion, or attack if you will, into the territory of a European Union member state as a European problem, not just a Spanish problem. This is a point that we have always advocated. We know that migrants, regardless of their motives, must be guided. Most often these are smugglers—some to make a profit, and others for their own interests,” said Minister Davor Božinović, among other things.
Minister Ivan Anušić stated that the army deploys to the border under specific circumstances, and these are not those circumstances. He added that there is no need to spread panic because the Croatian police remain at the border.
“Deploying to the border happens under specific circumstances, and these are not those circumstances. There is no need to spread panic again. What happened in Spain occurred due to specific circumstances. The Interior Ministry, Minister Davor Božinović, along with his department, meaning generally the police, monitors the borders and that will remain the case. The army deploys under completely different circumstances, and currently, these circumstances do not require the army at the border,” said Minister Anušić.
Unfortunately, he said, there are too many people who, for the sake of "a little bit of media attention," spread panic, untruths, sensationalist headlines, and everything that alarms and confuses the public.
“We should not do that, these are not topics with which the public should be alarmed. There are many other topics that we need and must communicate. Let's leave this to those who are in charge of it. The migrant crisis did not start yesterday, it has been going on for a decade, Croatia is successfully fighting it and will continue to fight it successfully,” Minister Anušić concluded.
