The Croatian men's water polo team secured a direct place in the quarter-finals of the World Championship in Singapore as the winner of Group D after achieving its third victory in the last, 3rd round match, defeating Greece 10-9.
Loren Fatović scored three goals for Croatia, Zvonimir Butić and Marko Žuvela added two each, and Marko Bijač was brilliant in goal, while Efstathios Kalogeropoulos and Ioannis Alafragis scored twice for Greece.
“We have achieved the first goal we had; direct placement in the quarterfinals in what is definitely the toughest group at the World Championship. Congratulations to the boys. Now we have four day to recuperate and rest. We were not right, we were not good, it was not what we can and must do to achieve more, but OK that gets calculated. The most important thing is that this team knows how to win a game and that is the biggest gain from today's game. The first big goal has been achieved, but unfortunately nothing crucial yet, nothing of what interests us here,” said Croatian team coach, Ivica Tucak.
Croatia will next play on Sunday in the quarter-finals, and its opponent will be the winner of the match between Romania and the second-placed team from Group B Hungary.
