Croatian football fans are in for another late night as Croatia takes on Portugal in the World Cup Round of 32.
The match will be played in Toronto, where Canada's national weather service has issued severe weather warnings for the metropolitan area ahead of kickoff. Temperatures are expected to climb to a sweltering 35 degrees Celsius, with extreme humidity adding to the challenge.
It's the same stadium where Croatia beat Panama 1-0 in the group stage. Thousands of Croatian supporters are expected to pack BMO Field once again, while fans back home will have plenty of time to get into the cheering mood before the 1 a.m. kickoff.
The match marks the first-ever World Cup meeting between Croatia and Portugal, two nations that have been consistent contenders at major international tournaments in recent years. It could also be one of the final World Cup appearances for two of football's greatest players—Croatia captain Luka Modrić and Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo.
Croatia head coach Zlatko Dalić said he expects a tactical battle rather than a duel between individuals, with the midfield likely to decide the outcome. He described Portugal as a team with few weaknesses and warned that any defensive mistake would be punished.
Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez said his side must be prepared for Croatia's experience, patience, and quality in midfield. He noted that knockout football is decided not by style but by efficiency, concentration, and the ability to capitalize on every opportunity.
Croatia advanced to the knockout stage after finishing second in Group L with victories over Panama and Ghana before suffering its only defeat of the tournament against England. Portugal also finished as runners-up in its group after defeating Uzbekistan and drawing with DR Congo and Colombia.
The match will also be played on the anniversary of the death of Portuguese forward Diogo Jota, who was killed in a car crash in Spain on July 3, 2025, along with his brother, André Silva.
Martínez said the Portuguese team would pay tribute to Jota, describing him as "our light" and an irreplaceable part of the squad.
Midfielder Vitinha said the players would take the field with extra motivation, playing in memory of Jota, for his family, and for their country.
Jota's close friend and teammate Rúben Neves described the period following the tragedy as the most difficult of his life. He said honoring Jota on the pitch has helped him carry on and revealed that he still sends messages to his late friend.
