Commemoration of "Operation Storm" in Petrinja and Slunj

On this day 31 years ago, on the third day of Operation "Storm", Petrinja, Slunj, Hrvatska Kostajnica, Korenica, and Udbina were liberated. The commemoration of the liberation of Petrinja began with a morning wake-up call (budnica) and continued with the laying of wreaths and lighting of candles at the monument to Colonel Predrag Matanović and his fellow combatants in Senjak.

Petrinja Paid Tribute to Veterans

The program in Petrinja started at 5:30 AM with a traditional morning wake-up call, and along with the laying of wreaths, a procession was held and a mass served.

At the monument to Predrag Matanović and his fellow combatants in Senjak at 2:00 PM, Mayor Magdalena Komes will welcom Branko Šubić upon the completion of a 205-kilometer multi-stage ultramarathon, held as part of the "Branko Šubić for Veterans" project.

A concert will be held tonight at the city beach.

Emotional Messages from Petrinja: "It Was a Terrible Hell"

Marija Dujnić, president of the "Croatian Woman" association from Petrinja, said that she will never forget this day 31 years ago.

"It was a terrible hell. When we started the operation on August 4, two of our tank crew members were killed—one during the first attack, and the other in the afternoon during the second attack," said Damir Maršanić of the Armored Cavalry Battalion Veterans Club of the 2nd Guards Brigade "Gromovi" (Thunderbolts). "Those are memories I can never erase as long as I live," he added.
