Croatia’s Borna Gojo continues to impress at the last Grand Slam tournament of the season, the US Open, qualifying for the 3rd round with a win over Mackenzie McDonald on Wednesday evening.
Gojo defeated the favored American, ranked number 40, with a convincing straight-sets victory. The final score was 6:3, 6:4, 6:4.
Although the American made two breaks at the beginning of the match and took a 2:1 lead, Gojo was untouchable for the rest of the match, taking 16 break points while McDonald had none.
In total, Gojo scored 13 aces with 64 percent of the first serve, and he took advantage of 17 break points.
With this victory, Gojo has reached a new career ranking, going from no. 105 to no. 89 in the ATP rankings.
Gojo will play the winner of the match between Jiri Vesely and Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the no. 20 seed, next.
